Brooks Mountain Biking Team

From the beginning of February, the BrooksMountain biking team has been meeting after school on Tuesdays at Oceanview School to ride several of the trails of Powell River. This year we had a committed squad of 16 individuals who made Tuesday rides, no matter the weather, a regular part of their weekly activities. Our focus has been to expand the sport, involve new riders and share the amazing trail system we have here in Powell River.

This year our culminating event was heading off to the BC High School Provincial Championships in Salmon Arm May 28^th. Ten riders were able to make the trip and compete with the best in high school athletics. Salmon Arm hosted an amazing race with an 8 km loop featuring a quad-burning uphill start and beautiful forested trails much like what we experience here in Powell River. Downhill the trail was fast with some excellent technical sections for our nimble riders. Fortunately we had weather much like Powell River so the dampness and mud on the trails were very familiar to all of the PR riders who gave it their all on the course.

The Powell River Team held their own with the rest of the province and posted a 3^rd place, three 5^th places and a 9^th place  in their respective categories. Our new team members placed 13^th, 17^th, 21^st and our gutsy Unicycle rider managed to beat 5 riders in his age category.

Finishing the weekend, we spent our last morning riding the Canoe trails with the Valemount High School team and had a great time making new friends in the process. The long drive back to Powell River was full of trail tales, reliving the race and the fun moments of the weekend. We even managed to fit in 3 Shuswap lake swims and a team pinkie “manicure”.

The Brooks team were awesome ambassadors for Powell River and our local biking community, we should be proud of them. Many thanks go to the Brooks PAC, Frank at Coast Cycle, Evan at Big-O, Cam Miller and Andy and Jocelyn Brinton for their support of the team over the season. Your support makes the team possible.
